Biography

Reina (assumed name) was an ordinary peasant girl from Tajima-zato until the local lord executed her parents, amongst countless others, for treason. The other Phoenix Clan lords refused to shelter the children of criminals, so Reina struck out on her own and ended up in the Fox Clan village Uka-zato. She was adopted by the Fox Clan merchant Mitama, who raised her to be strong and stand on her own. Eventually, Mitama moved his shop to the capital and tried to set it up as a sort of tourist attraction (with mascot characters and silly uniforms for the staff).

Throughout it all, Reina has been planning to assassinate Lord Tajima, if only to make his lands pass to his more competent brother. She trained with whatever weapons came to hand for most of her life, and her "treasure hunting" missions have sharpened her reflexes quite a bit. When a call to arms was issued to select bodyguards for the prince, Reina jumped to respond, realising that a position of such power would sooner or later bring her near her target.

Personality

Reina is more or less the designated large friendly person for the group. As a general rule, if she shuts up for five minutes, she's probably trying to steal something or kill someone. She's not particularly clever, and her actual physical strength is also quite lacking, but she gets quite sharp indeed when money is involved. Bring up a topic that bothers her, and she'll just laugh it off. Reina adores anything shiny, flashy, and/or expensive-looking, keeps a running ticker of every single rin spent on her job, and will plot to steal anything that strikes her fancy. She adores Prince Yuuzuki above most anything and everything else, and hopes to marry him when he comes of age.

Relationships

  • Ally— Ayame (菖蒲), the other booth babe at Mitama's shop. She's a little younger than Reina. A Yamato Nadeshiko who worries about everyone around her. Honest and hardworking. Usually comes crying to Reina when she's having a rough time. Ayame is a super-fan of the folk hero "Phantom Thief Tsubasa", and has a lot of collectible prints of him hanging in her room.
  • Debtor— Seimei (晴明), a monk from circumstances much like Reina's. Currently living in Uka-zato, far away from the main story. He emphasises forgiveness and redemption in all his teachings. Because of his rather innocent worldview, his few possessions and the offerings at his temple are always getting stolen; when that happens, it's always Reina who chases down the thieves for him. He hesitates to call her a friend, but will admit under duress that she's effectively saved his life many times by now.
  • Enemy— Lord Tajima Shichirou (但馬七郎), a noble who drove Reina's hometown into near-destruction. The son of a famous swordsman in the Phoenix Clan, he grew up undisciplined and disliked the intricacies of court life, finding more fun in drink and dueling than caring for his people and combatting evil. As a consequence, the towns put under his dominion in his youth grew lawless and bloody. Tajima had very little regard for human life, and ordered the execution of hundreds of peasants on utterly groundless treason charges. While her first priority is protecting Prince Yuuzuki, she has every intention of killing Tajima when the opportunity comes. (After his beloved father committed suicide rather than see his son allowing injustice, Shichirou put out his own eye by way of atonement, swore off his hedonistic lifestyle, and vowed to become a benevolent and fair lord like his father. Reina is unaware of this, and believes that the death and missing eye are the result of a heated duel between father and son.)
  • Mentor— Mitama (御魂), (Mitama-jiji to Reina), a widowed merchant who took care of Reina when she was an orphan living in the margins of society. While he initally had some hopes for marrying Reina when she grew older, her response to this idea was a frying pan to the face, so he ended up adopting her into the Fox Clan as his own child. Mitama is less than pleased at many of Reina's exploits, and the two often argue, but he's quite proud of her regardless, and eagerly supports her plan to marry Prince Yuuzuki (albeit for his own financial benefit). He owns the mysterious shop "Mitama-ya", which has a cute fox mascot and promises an authentic Uka-zato experience. It absolutely does not deal in stolen goods, honest!
  • Rival— Phantom Thief Tsubasa (怪盗翼), a local folk (anti)hero who steals from the merchants of Koukan and gives his findings to the peasants. His true identity is shrouded in mystery, as his name would imply. The Crane Clan members love him for his beautiful acrobatic manoeuvres, the Dragons for his amazing plans and ploys, and the Lions for his charity and daring; the Phoenixes, however, disapprove of his methods. Most of the Fox Clan adores him, but Reina is more loyal to the collective merchants of Koukan, and finds Tsubasa's showmanship rather grating besides. Worse, Tsubasa loves nothing more than stealing from thieves, so he and Reina are constantly locked in "theft battles" until it's no longer clear who even owned the treasure to begin with. One sometimes gets the feeling that the two of them are actually friends, somehow.
