TRPG:Magic (Mabui)

In Mabui, magic is a supernatural power, and is more specifically classified as shamanistic, black, white, or holy. Shamanistic magic draws upon the elements, black magic invokes the power of mazoku, and its counterpart, white magic, invokes the power of the ryuuzoku. Holy magic is the most mysterious of the four; its ultimate source is unknown.

Overview

The majority of spells have associated Chaos Words and Power Words. Chaos Words are a more-or-less lengthy, often poetic description of the force being drawn upon and what the spell is intended to accomplish. Power Words are basically the name of the spell and are much shorter. It is sufficient to think the words, but if they are spoken, the spell is significantly easier to cast.

Shamanistic Magic

Shamanistic magic draws upon fire, air, water, earth, metal, darkness, light, or raw astral substance.

Black Magic

Black magic draws upon the power of mazoku. In general, it produces offensive, destructive effects of no particular element, often taking the form of beams or explosions. All black magic affects the astral side and is, therefore, usable against mazoku and ryuuzoku, although its effectiveness varies.

Mazoku are, of course, capable of invoking this power naturally. However, it is also possible for other beings to use black magic "granted" by mazoku. Some magic-oriented mid-ranking mazoku, and most higher-ranking mazoku, grant specific spells, and there are also a few spells that draw upon the general force of mazoku (though these tend to be less powerful). In any case, the mazoku does not need to approve each individual casting of the spell - although it can be blocked from particular casters at will, this is rarely done - and does not suffer a direct drain in power as a result of the casting.

A spell never functions against the mazoku granting it; it is cast as normal, but the effect simply does not occur. A spell fails to work if the mazoku granting it is destroyed.

Casting black magic is not inherently evil and does not "corrupt" the caster. It can be used for good or evil purposes.

White Magic

White magic is the ryuuzoku equivalent of black magic. It is naturally usable by the ryuuzoku and, as black magic, can be granted to mortals. Most white magic spells are protective or healing in nature. Gankou was known to use white magic on occasion.

Holy Magic

Holy magic is somewhat mysterious and not widely understood.

Koukanese Magic

The nation of Koukan has an unusual magical tradition that relies upon petitioning various elemental or other spirits directly, usually without use of Chaos Words. It is therefore not "magic" as defined in the academic tradition of Alocasia, but is commonly grouped with true "magic" nonetheless. Setsudou Minoru and Enshu Rin were two users of Koukanese magic.
