Setting Information
Souls
The soul of a sapient being is divided into two parts: the lower or "animal" soul, and the higher soul that contains true emotion and reason. The higher soul seems to go somewhere beyond contact upon death (a point hotly debated among scholars), and cannot be contacted or called back by any known means. Nor can a higher soul be created by magic or artifice. However, lower souls can be created or returned to a corpse by moderately powerful magic, which is the basis for necromancy, golem creation, and so forth. This produces a very stupid creature, and the creator must take care to establish control lest the base desires of the lower soul run rampant.
Religion
Under the Graath Empire, various local deities have been incorporated into a syncretic pantheon. Most people offer veneration to various gods at relevant important times, such as at weddings or before long journeys, but overall, attitudes toward religion are lax compared to neighbouring countries. Various cults and unusual philosophies are tolerated, provided they don't make themselves too troublesome to civil authorities.
Major Gods of the Empire
- Degda: God of drinking and battle. Frequently portrayed as a stout, merry women wielding a halberd.
- Toimh: God of wealth, government, and urbanity. Frequently portrayed as a well-groomed middle-aged man with sharp features and a faint smile. Officially venerated by the Emperor.
- Vofri: God of death, mountains, and the sea. No consistent depiction; ranges from young to old, thoughtful to stern to capricious.
Other Gods of the Empire
- Anuid: God of prophecy. Portrayed as a tall, graceful man or woman (depending on the area) wearing milky white robes and carrying a crystal sphere and a scroll.
- Elatha: Moon God.
- Mani: God of machines. Portrayed as either an old but extremely tough blacksmith, or a man in his prime with skin like brass and silver eyes, depending on the doctrines of a given worshipper.
Organizations
The Clockwork Guild
- Keywords: Knowledge, Machines, Science
- Membership: ~750
- Headquarters: The Clockwork Tower, New Ashmoor, Graath Empire
- Extent: 17 guildhalls in the Graath Empire; 4 elsewhere
- Structure: Oligarchic high council -> local guild councils -> rank-and-file members
Artifacts
- The Eye of Argon: A legendary gemstone reputed to give the owner great powers, most often the ability to see any location in the past or present with perfect clarity, piercing all lesser attempts at concealment. Many consider its existence mere folklore.
- The Great Cog: A small, gleaming golden cog formerly kept at the Cathedral of Mani. Its true nature is a secret of Mani's high priests, but it seems to have something to do with the larger cosmic balance. Some time ago, it was stolen under mysterious circumstances by a wizard of the Clockwork Guild, and its current location is not widely known.
- Máitan: Ancestral blade of the Graath Emperors. It has not been used in living memory, but historical records indicate that it can slay dozens with each swing, apparently at some range.
